A Cannabaddie Guide to Cannabis Rescheduling

Hey cannabadies! Let’s talk about the latest chisme in legal cannabis: its rescheduling. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is shaking things up by reclassifying marihuana, potentially unlocking a wave of opportunities for cannabaddies looking to break into the industry. So, what's the chisme, and how will it impact us?

Let's break it down. The proposal on the table would move marihuana out of the tightly regulated Schedule I group and into the more relaxed confines of Schedule III. While this doesn't mean an immediate green light for recreational use, it's a step in the right direction, recognizing cannabis's medicinal potential and setting the stage for broader acceptance? That’s the overall idea they want us to believe.

So, what's in it for us Cannabaddies?

Innovation in Wellness

From CBD-infused coffee shops to boutique dispensaries, big cities are hubs of innovation in the cannabis wellness space. With it potentially entering the mainstream as a Schedule III drug, Chicago entrepreneurs have a prime opportunity to carve out their niche in the growing cannabis market. Whether it's crafting artisanal edibles or curating wellness experiences, the possibilities are endless!

Navigating the Regulatory Maze

Let's face it, the regulatory landscape of the cannabis industry can feel like traversing a concrete jungle. But with reclassification on the horizon, there's hope for smoother sailing ahead. Cannabaddies must stay in the know, keeping an eye on evolving regulations and compliance requirements to ensure their businesses thrive in this ever-changing landscape.

Tax Relief and Financial Freedom

For cannabaddie businesses, navigating the murky waters of federal taxation has been a major headache! 280E has long created issues with not allowing cannabis businesses to deduct necessary expenses. Causing millions in expenses across the country. I mean it’s seriously ridiculous the way they have cannabis businesses, and social equity businesses, paying exorbitant amount of money to stay on Uncle Sam’s good side.

But with rescheduling potentially easing tax burdens, it's a game-changer for those looking to grow their enterprises. Imagine being able to deduct expenses like rent and payroll without the looming specter of expensive taxes hanging overhead—it's a breath of fresh air for entrepreneurs.

Bridging the Gap in Cannabis Education

As cannabis moves closer to the mainstream, there's a growing need for education and awareness, especially in urban communities. Urban entrepreneurs have a vital role to play in bridging this gap, providing accurate information, promoting responsible consumption, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity within the industry. Now is the time to support and stand by social equity enterprises and let your money speak for you!

Advocating for Equity and Justice

Let's not forget the social justice implications of cannabis rescheduling. For far too long, communities of color have borne the brunt of the War on Drugs, facing disproportionate arrests and incarceration for non-violent cannabis offenses. As entrepreneurial cannabaddies, we have a responsibility to advocate for equity and justice, ensuring that the benefits of cannabis legalization are felt by all.

This is not a solution by any means, in fact, it’s false hope.

There are critics, including those who argue that rescheduling doesn't go far enough in dismantling the systemic barriers to cannabis legalization. Rescheduling will do nothing for all of those currently imprisoned for non violent cannabis crimes. What we need is de-scheduling and real, comprehensive legislation.

Rescheduling is a false hope because although it is a recognition, it only applies to the medicinal use of cannabis. Meaning: if you don’t have a prescription or doctor’s note, then there is absolutely no change. The criminalization of cannabis and it’s consequences will not change, nor is there any relief for those already convicted.

Let’s not act like the Government doesn’t have a history of distracting us.

There have been numerous times through out America’s political history where it has been thought that the President and politicians in general would use controversial policies to distract the American Public from bigger issues.

And what a coincidence that this rescheduling is happening during a time when thousands of University students are fighting to divest from corporations who support Israel and their ongoing genocide. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

It is important that we’re supporting organizations like Canna Equity IL Coalition, organizations who have hit the ground running with their advocacy work. While the road ahead may be rocky, one thing's for sure: the cannabis revolution is just getting started.
