Thrift : The New Home of Our Open Mic

Gage Park isn’t what you would consider a fun place to hang out. The lesser known neigher of Brighton Park and Englewood, Gage Park is actually where my Open Mic has found a new home.

The thing about my Open Mic is that it has always been an artistic oasis in some of Chicago’s more notorious neighborhoods. From the Austin neighborhood to Little Village, the Open Mic has continued on. Despite losing venues and performers. It is still the littest time on a Wednesday night.

When I was looking for a venue at the beginning of summer, I knew it had to be outdoors. Smokers need good ventilation, and nothing beats the cool fresh air from the outdoors. Even if it is Chicago, we need our fresh air.

The next thing is I knew I wanted to be on the south side. Not far south, just far enough. In those neighborhoods that never have anything fun going on. Neighborhoods like Brighton Park and Gage Park. Areas that are predominantly brown and Black and filled with talent.

In case you didn’t know, I recently moved from the suburbs back into Chicago. Not far from the Open Mic. I want to create something in my neighborhood that will cultivate art and music. A place that unites instead of divides.

Thrift LLC was by far the best decision I made. This beautiful and quirky Thrift store sits almost hidden on 59th St. Amid liquor stores and currency exchanges, this little hub overflows with art and some of the best purchases you’ll ever make.

I am so happy and proud that the Open Mic has found a place that aligns so perfectly. Thrift LLC is exactly as it’s name implies, a thrift store. It is Black owned and family operated and honestly some of the best people we have ever had the pleasure of hosting us. I am super grateful to the owner and the staff at Thrift for always going above and beyond and for opening their doors to us.

Thrift LLC has a variety of items for men and women. I am in love with their home section because I always find something cute for my apartment. I am also a fan of their earrings and get so many compliments when I wear them. Always at affordable prices! And they always have deals and sales going on.

Another reason I love Thrift is because they truly value community. If you keep up with their calendar, they have a number of events right there in their lovely space. From Denim Parties, to Thrift After Dark, there is a little something for everyone.

I encourage you to follow Thrift on social media. As well as give them a visit for a shopping trip. It is truly a gem in Gage Park and I am so happy to have the Open Mic there every month.

The next Open Mic will be held on Wednesday August 28th and it is our FIRST Themed Open Mic. The theme for the month of August is: The Color Pink!

Cannabaddie Talk is an inclusive safe space and one that promotes acceptance. Everyone is welcome to the Open Mic and to shop at Thrift.
