5 Influential Women of Color in the Cannabis Space

Let's be honest, the cannabis industry is in serious need of diversity. Among the pioneers and innovators in this space, women of color have played a significant role in reshaping the industry's landscape. From advocacy to entrepreneurship, these trailblazers have not only shattered glass ceilings but have also paved the way for a more inclusive and diverse cannabis community. Let's take a closer look at five remarkable women of color who have made a lasting impact on the cannabis industry.

1. Priscilla Vilchis

I think there are few stories we can look up to that are like Priscilla Vilchis. A Mexi-canna and absolute boss, Priscilla started her career in Healthcare. Investing and risking to create what she describes as her cannabis empire. Love her story. She also recently partnered with one of my favorite cannabaddies, Lil Kim, to launch her Aphrodisiac brand. She’s featured in magazines and newspapers galore, and is a living example of changing the narrative. She is also very proud of her title as the first Latina in cannabis.

2. Wanda James

Wanda James is a true pioneer, often referred to as the "First Lady of Cannabis." She is the co-founder of Simply Pure Dispensary, making her one of the first African-American women to own a cannabis dispensary in the United States. James is passionate about her work to advocate for diversity and inclusion. Her work emphasizes the need for people of color to have a seat at the table in every aspect of the industry. Her work as an entrepreneur, activist, and public speaker has contribute to changing perceptions and promoting equity within the cannabis space.

3. Mala Munoz

A hilarious addition to this list, Mala Munoz embodies everything I envision in a cannabaddie. Her social media is raw and honest and funny as hell. Featured in publications like Cosmopolitan and Forbes, you might have come across her stand up comedy on Tik Tok. I love her content and seeing someone like her being openly funny, openly sexy, openly high is so inspiration. Make sure to check out Marijuanera Podcast.

4. Roz McCarthy

Roz McCarthy's dedication to providing education and empowerment to communities of color in the cannabis industry is inspiring. She is the founder of Minorities for Medical Marijuana (M4MM), a nonprofit organization that advocates for equity, diversity, and inclusion. I am fortunate to have met Roz at last years Benzinga Cannabis Conference. She is a great public speaker and a brilliant mind. McCarthy's vision is to create a platform where marginalized communities can access resources, education, and economic opportunities within the cannabis sector.

5. Mary Jane Oatman

A descendant of Chief Looking Glass from the Nez Perce Tribe, Mary Jane Oatman is the creator of the Indigenous Cannabis Industry Association. Promoting indigenous cultures throughout the cannabis space, advocating for education and empowerment. Seeing a strong connection between Hemp and the healing of indigenous tribes in this country. Most of her work revolves around advocating for policies that align with the Tribal nations, and equal access to medical cannabis programs.

These five women of color are instrumental in shaping the cannabis industry into a more inclusive and diverse space. Through their advocacy, entrepreneurship, and dedication to social justice, they have broken barriers and inspired future generations to take part in this transformative sector. Their accomplishments remind us that diversity and equity are not aspirations but are essential for the industry's growth and overall success.
